What Things Actually Cost at the Perfume Souk
Most guides tell you to bargain but never tell you what a fair price looks like. Here is what these items genuinely sell for as of 2026, based on what I pay when I source there myself. Treat the left column as the opening ask and the right column as a realistic close.

The one line in that table you should not try to bargain hard on is dehn oud. Genuine aged agarwood oil has a real raw-material cost behind it. If a vendor drops from AED 2,000 to AED 300 without hesitating, you were never being offered real oud in the first place.

Real dehn oud is never cheap
Agarwood forms only when a wild aquilaria tree is infected by a specific mould, and it takes years. A tola of good Hindi or Cambodi oud costs thousands of dirhams at wholesale before anyone has made a profit. Any bottle labelled dehn al oud at AED 100 is a synthetic oud accord — usually a lab molecule in a carrier oil. That is not dishonest in itself, and some smell very good, but you should know what you are buying and pay accordingly.
What Cambodi and Hindi actually mean
These are origin and profile labels, not brand names. Hindi oud (from India) is the barnyard-leaning, animalic, sharply fermented style — powerful and divisive. Cambodi (Cambodia and Southeast Asia) is sweeter, fruitier and rounder, and much easier for a newcomer. If a vendor cannot explain the difference when you ask, he is reselling, not sourcing.
The smell test
Put one drop on the back of your hand and wait ten minutes. Real oud moves — it opens sharp or sour, then settles into wood, leather and a soft sweetness. A synthetic stays flat and identical from minute one to minute thirty. If it smells strong at first application and disappears within an hour, you have a fragrance oil, not an oil-based oud.
Pressure selling to walk away from
Be wary of anyone who insists on applying the product to you before you agree, quotes a price only after you have committed, claims a last-piece-today urgency, or blends something in the back where you cannot watch. Genuine sellers are relaxed, because they know the material speaks for itself.
