What Is Bakhoor? The Scented Heart of the Emirati Home

by The Scent Library on Jun 11, 2026

Walk into any Emirati home, and the first thing that greets you isn't a sight or a sound — it's a scent. A warm, sweet, smoky perfume hanging in the air, clinging gently to cushions, curtains, and the clothes of everyone in the room. That's bakhoor.

As bakhoor videos rack up millions of views and the word starts appearing in Western fragrance reviews, here's a proper explanation from the place where it has perfumed daily life for centuries.

What Is Bakhoor?

Bakhoor (Arabic: بخور, also spelled bukhoor or bakhour) refers to scented wood chips or briquettes that have been soaked in fragrant oils — traditionally oud, but also rose, amber, musk, saffron, and sweet resins. When placed over hot charcoal or an electric burner, the bakhoor releases dense, perfumed smoke that scents an entire room and everything in it.

The word comes from the Arabic root for incense and fumigation. Strictly speaking, bakhoor is not a single scent — it's a category, and every family, perfume house, and region has its own blends. Some lean smoky and woody; others are sweet, floral, or rich with amber.

Bakhoor vs. Oud: What's the Difference?

The two are constantly confused, so here's the clean distinction:

  • Oud is a raw material — the precious resinous heartwood of the Aquilaria tree, or the oil distilled from it. (We've written a complete guide to oud here.)
  • Bakhoor is a prepared product — wood chips or bricks infused with a blend of fragrance oils, made specifically for burning. Oud is often one ingredient in bakhoor, but bakhoor is not pure oud.

Think of it this way: oud is to bakhoor what a single grape variety is to a finished wine blend.

Bakhoor in Emirati Culture

In the UAE and across the Gulf, bakhoor is hospitality made visible. A mabkhara — the traditional incense burner — is passed among guests in the majlis so each person can perfume their clothing, hands, and hair with the rising smoke. It marks Fridays, weddings, Eid celebrations, and the simple act of welcoming someone into your home.

There's a well-known saying in the Gulf that a guest should leave your home smelling better than when they arrived. That philosophy — fragrance as generosity — is the heart of bakhoor culture, and it's exactly what makes Arabian perfumery so different from anywhere else in the world.

How to Use Bakhoor at Home (Step by Step)

  1. Choose your burner. A traditional mabkhara uses charcoal; modern electric burners are easier, safer indoors, and don't add a charcoal note. For beginners, we recommend electric.
  2. Heat first, then add. If using charcoal, light the disc and wait until it glows grey-white — usually a few minutes. Place a small piece of bakhoor on top (or in the electric burner's tray).
  3. Less is more. One small piece scents a large room. The smoke should drift, not billow.
  4. Scent your textiles. The traditional move: let the smoke pass gently through clothing, scarves, or hair for a perfume that lasts days. Keep a respectful distance — warm smoke, never hot.
  5. Ventilate lightly afterwards. A cracked window lets the scent settle into a soft, lingering ambiance rather than heavy smoke.

Why Is Bakhoor Suddenly Trending in the West?

The same wave carrying oud and Arabian perfumery into the US, UK, and Europe is carrying bakhoor with it. Home fragrance culture exploded in recent years, and candle lovers are discovering that bakhoor offers something candles can't: a scent with cultural depth, dramatic ritual, and serious longevity. One burning session can perfume a room — and your wardrobe — for days.

Love the Scent, Skip the Smoke?

Not everyone can burn incense at home — apartments, smoke alarms, sensitive lungs. Two ways to live with the bakhoor scent anyway:

Wear it. Our best-selling Bakhoor Bliss — created by perfumers Saeed Al Nuaimi and Kevin Mathys — captures the experience of a home perfumed with bakhoor in a long-lasting extrait de parfum. It's the fragrance our boutique visitors in Abu Dhabi and Dubai ask for by name, and the closest thing to bottled majlis air.

Spray it. Our luxury room sprays bring the Arabian home-fragrance ritual — woody vetiver, soft incense, golden gourmand notes — without any burning at all.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bakhoor

What does bakhoor smell like?

It varies by blend, but most bakhoor shares a warm, sweet-smoky character — woody depth from oud, softness from amber and musk, and often floral or saffron facets. Imagine a luxurious incense that's rounder and sweeter than church incense.

Is bakhoor the same as incense sticks?

No. Incense sticks burn directly with a flame; bakhoor is heated over charcoal or an electric element, releasing fragrance more slowly and richly, without the burnt-stick note.

Is it safe to burn bakhoor indoors?

Yes, with normal precautions: use a stable burner, never leave charcoal unattended, keep away from smoke detectors, and ventilate lightly. Electric burners are the gentlest indoor option.

Can I wear bakhoor as a perfume?

Traditionally you wear the smoke — letting it perfume clothes and hair. For skin, a bakhoor-inspired perfume like Bakhoor Bliss gives you the scent in wearable, long-lasting form.

How long does the bakhoor scent last?

In a room, several hours to a full day. On fabrics, the scent can linger for days — one reason it has been the Gulf's favorite way to perfume the home for centuries.
